THE IRONY OF A NEW YEAR
“Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it; except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain”. Psalm 127: 1
“Ask not what your country will do for you – ask what you can do for your country” John F. Kennedy, January 20th, 1961
If you are reading this it means, you are alive and we are glad for that. It’s a new year and we were hoping to talk about new year resolutions and the law, but shocking however is the sad event that ushered us into the novel year and one would pause to ask, those people that are busy bombing the whole country, could that be their new year resolution? Well, we hope not.
First, it was this upheaval christened kidnap. Yes kidnap and amnesty, then the Independence day bomb blast in Abuja. Jos would follow suite, Bayelsa also and now the New year’s eve bomb blast in Abuja.
Well, if we decide to apportion blames who do we start with? Do we blame it on the forth coming election? Do we blame religion? Ok someone said it can’t be. I concur also, because this has gone far beyond religion. Do we blame ethnicity? Far from it! Do we blame the government, who is the government; does anyone go by the name government?
Ok, let’s blame security, but who is security, is it the police that have their own issues and who were once rated the most corrupt institution according to the report of the National Bureau of statistics (NBS) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Business Survey on Crime and Corruption of the EFCC in 2007 or the State Security that still haven’t convicted anybody for the Independence day bomb blast? Did someone say judiciary and lawyers? Hmmm, but truth be told, the court will only convict based on the evidence before it and if the security had done their job in the first place, we wouldn’t be needing law suits!
So back to the security guys, civil defence, they have dogs I guess but may be the dogs can’t detect bombs. Peace Corp, Peace Corp! (Ok. they are still trying to put their acts together after that protracted law suit) well, we can’t blame them either. How about the Nigerian Army? it is still unbelievable that a bomb was detonated in an army barrack, but what’s their defence, it was in ‘’Mami’’ market, where is the Mami located? If the army which is the Ministry of Defence Nigeria has cannot protect its own home from terrorists, then what manner of defence does the common man have?
We are even planning to send troupe to Ivory Coast but what happens to our own beloved country? Anyway, all the people hurt in the new year bomb blast were reported to be civilians, it means, the army protected themselves so I guess it was a matter of ; you are on your own you “bloody civilian” as they would always put it.(Now am getting emotional! Ok I will Watch it)
As much as we would love to blame the army, we won’t. It goes without saying that the state of the security system in Nigeria has deteriorated so much that we are at the mercy of God.
We do not blame the security, you and I are to blame(It’s called taking responsibility!) the alleged terrorists are human beings with families too, people who cover them and make excuses for them, thus making it very hard for the security officials to find them. What part have you played to stop the fire works or flying rockets or knock out as it is popularly called, knowing the fact that it is illegal?
Who did you report to when you saw that guy making suspicious moves? What do you do with the God given technical knowledge you have or the one you received in school, do you help develop our power sector or construct weapons of mass destruction? How did you resolve that fight in your neighbourhood or did you just go away like it was none of your business or worse still, fabricate some lies to the other party to seal the feud? Have you ever called that little boy inn your neighbourhood and advised him that he is towing the path of destruction? What character to you inculcate in the little child close to you?
We realise this might sound like a sermon now but the recent events call for sobriety. We should all think back even as we make our new year resolutions(but check your progress on the last one) for 2011.
What are your plans for Nigeria, how do you think you can move the Nation forward, is it by sitting down and criticizing? What do you say about your country? How patriotic are you? Who are you voting for in 2011, will you register? Do you plan to carry ballot box or the Direct Data Capturing machine in your state on the election day? What do you do for a living? Is it kidnapping or bombing? Do you enjoy being an accessory to or after a crime? Do you just plot the crime? Will you just sit at home in 2011 and eat? Will you abide by road traffic rules or just beat traffic light and drive one way without your seat belt? How many laws will you obey this year? Even bribery is an offence, will you give or take?
It’’s up to you to decide if it’s going to be a good or a bad year for you but whatever you do, we urge you not to give up hope, Nigeria will get better, it may seem like we started 2011 on a sad note but with the right attitude and work, we will attain the New Nigeria. The future of Nigeria is in your hands. Obey the law and do the right!
We wish all those who were injured as a result of the bomb blast quick recovery and to those who lost their loved ones, may God grant them the fortitude to bear the loss and those who couldn’t make it, may their souls rest in peace, amen.
Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
Have a Prosperous, Proactive and Participative Happy 2011!
